Renowned art historian, Cambridge classicist, and best-selling author Mary Beard will unpack the history of the troubling stories in Titian’s paintings.
Violence against women – whether rape or abduction – is central to the subject matter of Titian’s poesie, or “painted poetries.” Renowned art historian, Cambridge classicist, and best-selling author Mary Beard will unpack the history of these troubling stories, their origins in Antiquity, their centrality to this series of Renaissance mythologies, and their relevance today.
This program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Titian: Women, Myth & Power.
