The Radical White-line Wood Cut with David Curcio

Description:

Developed in Providence, MA in 1915, the White-line woodcut employs minimal cutting to create colorful, unique prints. Lines are cut into the block to delineate the image and inked with watercolor using a common paintbrush, confining colors to the separated spaces. While the carved lines print white, the raised areas achieve variegated color—solid or blended. No press is used in this process, and your projects can be taken with you to work at home.

Think you know the process? Advanced students will experiment in blending, fading, and working reductively to create ever more color and variation.

Note: This class will not be held on Labor Day.

About the instructor: 

David Curcio received his MFA from Pratt Institute in 2001. From 2001-2005, he taught woodcut and etching abroad for American universities. In 2002, he was granted “Master Printer” status in etching at Il Bisonte Studio Grafica in Florence, Italy and in 2005 attended a two-month residency in Japan to learn the practice of Japanese woodcut (“moku-hanga”). He has taught extensively and attended numerous residencies. He currently owns a private woodcut/etching studio in Watertown, MA., where he has taught courses and private lessons. His work is included in April Vollmer’s Japanese Woodblock Print Workshop: A Modern Guide to the Ancient Art of Mokuhanga.
