Berklee faculty member Yoon-Ji Lee’s ambitious new work Migration which is a powerful depiction of her challenges navigating the immigration system and of her evolving hybrid identity as both a Korean and an American. Detroit-based composer and experimental rock musician Kirsten Carey says of her new work Talk Around It: “The piece is meant to mirror the uncomfortable tensions and disagreements of perception that a lot of us experience within our families or other groups of loved ones, especially within the past year.” Hinge also will perform Sam Pluta’s intense yet playful American Tokyo Daydream IV inspired by Japanese modern art, and Julius Eastman’s monumental and epic Gay Guerrilla; Eastman’s call to arms for liberation and equal rights for all.

ABOUT HINGE
Founded in 2018, Hinge is a quartet made up of Philipp Stäudlin (saxophones), Dan VanHassel (electric guitar), Matt Sharrock (percussion), and Keith Kirchoff (piano). Lying somewhere between a classical chamber ensemble and a rock band, Hinge presents programs combining cutting-edge contemporary and experimental music, seamless multimedia integration, and the innovative re-imagining of rock and pop songs.
Dedicated to expanding and diversifying the repertoire for their ensemble, Hinge has commissioned new works and arrangements from composers including Roscoe Mitchell, Kirsten Carey, Marti Epstein, Yoon-Ji Lee, Curtis Hughes, Nicole Murphy, and Ravi Kittappa. Recent seasons have also featured works by Julius Eastman, Sam Pluta, Alvin Singleton, Philippe Hurel, Hannah Lash, Meshuggah, Caroline Louise Miller, Louis Andriessen, Chaya Czernowin, Klaus Lang, Björk, and more.
