Steve Nieve and Kessada: Stories of Love

Steve Nieve, renowned keyboard player for Elvis Costello and the Attractions is arguably the greatest rock keyboard player who has ever recorded and performed live. Benmont Tench (of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) and Roy Bittan (of the East Street Band) may have put in more touring miles and recording sessions, but Nieve’s playing ushered in the New Wave and took hold of the rock music listeners’ ears in a way that keyboard players very seldom do. In an era when electric guitar ruled the waves Nieve’s Vox Organ jumped out of the mix and grabbed audiences by the throat.

A Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Grammy awarded artist, Nieve is best known for playing piano, organ and keyboard instruments with Elvis Costello and the Attractions and later named the Imposters. Nieve joined Costello when studying at the Royal College of Music in London when only 17 years old. Besides Costello, Nieve has played with British pop-masters Squeeze. Madness, and with Bono of U2, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Smokey Robinson, Lou Reed, Robert Wyatt, Paul Weller and The Rolling Stones. In addition to his ensemble work Nieve has released several solo albums to critical acclaim including Keyboard Jungle (1983),  Playboy (1987), It’s Raining Somewhere (1996), Mumu (2001) and Windows (2004). In collaboration with Muriel Téodori ‘the classical opera Welcome to the Voice’ was released in 2007.

On Thursday May the 19th, Steve Nieve and vocalist Kessada will perform “Stories of Love” – an evening of songs by Tom Waits, Neil Young, Elvis Costello and others – with their own unique arrangements.
