Pride Was a Riot: 50 Years of Protests, Celebrations and Pride in Boston

Join Joan Ilacqua, Executive Director of The History Project: Documenting LGBTQ Boston for a overview of the Stonewall Riots and the 50 years of protests and celebrations that followed. Using photographs and stories found in The History Project’s archives, we’ll cover Boston’s first pride commemoration and march and the continued debate if Pride is a celebration, a protest, or both.
Joan Ilacqua is Executive Director of The History Project: Documenting LGBTQ Boston. Prior to taking the helm at The History Project in January 2020, she served as Co-Chair of The History Project’s board of directors and as Harvard Medical School’s Archivist for Diversity and Inclusion. She is a member of the New England Archivists’ Inclusion and Diversity Committee, and has a background in advocacy and oral history. She is a graduate of UMass Boston’s Public History master’s program, and earned her Bachelor of Arts at the University of Puget Sound.
