Loading Dock Gallery’s new show, Postcards From the Edge, reflects upon this difficult time we have all lived through and celebrates the better times that lie ahead. This show incorporates work inspired by travel, missing someone while you’ve been apart, distance, the space between people, imagined travel of somewhere you’ve never been, somewhere out of this world. . . .
Like postcards, the pieces in this show are intended as messages and to hold a moment of resonance with the viewer. Many of the works in this show are standard postcard size, while others are varying sizes of two dimensional and three dimensional work. Ceramics, jewelry, wearable art, and more are also featured.
John Dunkelberg’s oversized postcards exhort us to leave the real world behind and enjoy the escape of imagination. Dunkelberg says, “We all could use a getaway right now. From our homes, our jobs, or perhaps our reality.” Linda Dunn’s expressive paintings of the ocean evoke strong feelings of longing. Dunn says, “This year, we learned to stay apart and stay home. Maybe that longed-for trip to the beach with family will help restore our balance.” Suzanne Hodge’s painting of an empty raft on Lovejoy Pond last summer resonates the emptiness we have all felt during this time. The raft, she says, is “waiting for the return of summer revelers.” This summer brings hope for better health and promise for long-awaited reunions of friends and families around the globe.
Postcards from the Edge runs from June 30th to August 1st.
