Mistral presents: "Flights of Fancy"

Mistral brings its 25th Anniversary Season to a close in a program that features a large cast of both woodwinds and strings in four beguiling works. This program will be performed in two intimate venues: Sunday April 24 at 5 pm at St. Paul’s Church in Brookline.

With a roster of nine players in this program, Mistral welcomes back husband and wife Chicago Symphony members Lawrence Neuman, viola, and Qing Hou, violin, as well as New York musicians oboist Kemp Jernigan, and clarinetist Todd Palmer.  Boston Symphony players Richard Ranti, bassoon and horn player Rachel Childers will complete the woodwind quintet along with Julie Scolnik on flute. Donald Palma, longtime Mistral bass player and cellist Sasha Scolnik-Brower (who returns from Amsterdam) will complete the cast of nine!

IBERT (1890-1962) Trois Pièces for woodwind quintet.

 DOHNÁNYI (1877-1960) Serenade for String Trio in C Major.

SPOHR (1784-1859) Nonet for strings & winds.

With contrasting works from France, Russia, Hungary and Germany, the first half of the concert lets the woodwinds shine alone in two very short works for woodwind quintet by Ibert and Shostakovich, followed by a dynamic work for just string trio by Hungarian composer Dohnányi. After intermission both winds and strings come together to bring the concert and Mistral’s twenty-fifth anniversary season to a rousing finale.
