The McMullen Museum welcomes Professor of Art History Daria Borghese for a virtual lecture on the Galleria Borghese. The Galleria houses a collection begun by Cardinal Scipione Borghese (1579–1633), nephew of Pope Paul V. Borghese will discuss how Scipione assembled antiquities and early modern paintings and sculptures by artists like Raphael, Caravaggio, Titian, and Bernini to elevate the family’s rank in Rome’s aristocratic hierarchy and to justify his own recent rise in social status. She will also explain how Prince Marcantonio IV Borghese (1730–1800) renovated the Borghese villa on the edge of Rome to install the collection in twenty thematic rooms that convey the family’s position in the city.

Daria Borghese is Professor of Art History, American University of Rome. Professor Borghese publishes widely on Italian Renaissance and Baroque art with a focus on the role of patronage in the formation of collections. Her recent publications include books on the Casina di Pio IV in the Vatican, Palazzo Colonna, and Palazzo Borromeo.
