Screening of “River of Gold” with introduction by filmmaker Sarah Dupont

Narrated by Academy Award winners Sissy Spacek, and Herbie Hancock, “River of Gold” is the disturbing account of a clandestine journey into Peru’s Amazon rainforest to uncover the savage unraveling of pristine jungle by illegal small scale gold mining. In this documentary film by the Amazon Aid Foundation, Ron Haviv and Donovan Webster, two war journalists, led by Peruvian scientist and activist Enrique Ortiz, bear witness to the apocalyptic destruction in the pursuit of illegally mined gold with consequences on a global scale.

Following the film screening will be a discussion about the gold supply chain, ethical solutions for metalsmiths and jewelers, and ways in which all consumers can encourage responsibly sourced gold. Join us as art conservator Birgit Strähle offers an overview of gold leaf techniques throughout history with her lecture “Applied Fascination – Gold Leaf Techniques.” This enthralling program will focus on gold leaf production and techniques from 2000 BCE to present day, insights of “how to gild,” and available products and techniques. The lecture will be followed by Q & A and the audience is invited to have a closer look at gilding tools, materials and mock-ups featuring historic techniques. Birgit received an MA in art history from the University of Braunschweig, Germany and a Diploma in paintings and sculpture conservation from the University of Applied Sciences in Cologne, Germany. She works as an associate paintings conservator at the Worcester Art Museum and volunteers at Worcester’s Sprinkler Factory community art space as co-director.
