White Rhino, Jonathan Latiano
Latiano mourns the loss of the White Rhinoceros with an immersive installation of black hand-cut foam while Zwart wrestles with the yo-yo emotions of rage and playfulness in contrasts within the same object.
Latiano fills the gallery with thousands of hand-cut black foam fragments to build an ominous landscape. While deeply unnatural in origin, the mounds of foam emulate natural formations reminiscent of volcanic stone, creating a perceived “human” environment.
Zwart objects encompass a yo-yo of emotions from rage and helplessness to playfulness and delight, the artist grapples with polarized politics and the horror of school shootings, while attempting to create a soothing salve with the
