Beginning October 1, 2020, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is pleased to announce that admission will be free Thursday afternoon and evening hours on the first Thursday of every month from October through June from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The Museum is significantly increasing the number of free hours, from 37 per year to 95. In addition to this new free Thursday programming, the Gardner will continue its beloved, free Neighborhood Nights.
Starting in November, the Gardner’s free first Thursdays will feature a range of free digital programs, highlighting the various ways ISGM works with local artists. Drawing upon the Museum’s rich Neighborhood Salon Luminary program, this new Luminary Lens Series features local artists reacting to works in the Gardner’s art collection.
Upcoming digital programs include:
10/1 – Dear Mr. McKeller: an ode to one man’s impact, presented in conjunction with the exhibition, Boston’s Apollo: Thomas McKeller and John Singer Sargent.
11/5 – Luminary Lens Project by Will Dailey // Sound Blue in an empty Yellow Room Whistler’s Nocturne
12/3 – Explore Shen Wei: Painting in Motion exhibition through guided meditation and explore the installation of a new Polly Thayer Starr Artist in the Education Studio. Both projects will be featured online as well as onsite.
“We are excited to continue providing opportunities for visitors to attend for free,” said Peggy Fogelman, Norma Jean Calderwood Director of the Museum. “In this time of isolation and struggle for many, it is so important to give everyone the opportunity to escape and enjoy something for a little while.”
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the museum is operating under a highly restricted visitor capacity. All tickets must be purchased ahead of time through the Gardner’s website and entering will be on a timed ticket system. While in the museum, all must wear a face covering and maintain a safe six feet from other patrons. Wipes and hand sanitizer are available.
Free First Thursdays are supported in part by the Wallace Minot Leonard Foundation. The Museum receives operating support from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
