Free and Not a Slave: The Legacy of Margaret Tulip

The Free and Not a Slave: The Legacy of Margaret Tulip exhibit considers Margaret and her legacy through the lens of art and history. Among the works in the exhibit are A Dress for Margaret, an artist rendering of what Margaret might have looked like, a family tree showing research in progress about Margaret’s Black and Indigenous heritages and descendants, and works on loan from Lexington Historical Society.

In addition to a focus on Margaret Tulip, the exhibit celebrates contributions made by other Black women in Lexington. This includes two representations of Sylvia Ferrell-Jones, an extraordinary leader who worked to eliminate racism and empower women. A Lexington community member nominated Ms. Ferrell-Jones for inclusion in LexSeeHer’s proposed monument to women.
