In Black Glass the goal is to explore how sound can create movement which can be interpreted in a visual aspect. This leads to a captivating performance in which Fotini translates the soundscapes created by the bands into her canvas which in turn influences the musicians and what they are creating at the moment. This generates a compelling and hypnotizing space for the audience since not only can they hear the music but perceive it visually as well.
The project “Black Glass” was inspired by the word “Etznab”, an ancient Mayan word that means mirror. In the Mayan calendar Etznab is a Trecena, calendar cycle, and is referred to as the daysign of obsidian, an extremely sharp natural glass formed by volcanic activity. Like obsidian, Etznab is seen to cut to the core of things, cutting through illusion to the clarity, potential and truth of who we are. It is considered a mirror of reality and by reflecting on an obsidian mirror one can see truth.
