A discussion of relationships between language and music! You’ll explore how composers from the German-speaking world have taken musical inspiration from poetry in selected examples of Lieder.
This will be an opportunity to read and discuss some of the poems that have inspired musical composers, as well as a chance to listen together to German Lieder from the 19th century and to consider how the music relates to the poetry in these songs.
You will also reflect on the possibilities for how music can convey emotions or communicate meaning, both thinking about these Romantic-era Lieder and drawing on your own experiences listening to music in the present day.
