Carnal Knowledge (1971) follows the sexual exploits of two friends over a 25-year period after nice guy Sandy (Art Garfunkel) and charming schemer Jonathan (Jack Nicholson) first meet as college roommates at Amherst College in the late 1940s.
Frank discussion of sexual issues progressed over the 1960s and 1970s, though this was sometimes at odds with local community standards. A theater owner in Albany, Georgia was convicted of distributing obscene material after showing Carnal Knowledge. The U.S. Supreme Court overturned the conviction in 1974, which led to the film’s re-release with the tagline: “The United States Supreme Court has ruled that ‘Carnal Knowledge’ is not obscene. See it now!”
