Be The Change, the second, all-new iteration of a major public art exhibit, produced by the Jewish Arts Collaborative, interpreting social justice issues through art, opens in the Fenway on Wednesday, August 2nd and runs through late Oct.
Conceived by Israeli/American artist Caron Tabb in collaboration with longtime activist Ruth Messinger, the exhibit groups seven large-scale pieces by a diverse group of local artists based on the Jewish concept of a tzedakah (justice/charity) box. Each work focuses on a different social justice issue and invites viewers to take action, promoting art and activism, often called “artivism.”

The artists participating in this year’s Boston Be The Change public art installation are: Ciceley Carew; Julia Cseko; Ruth Kathryn Henry; Caron Tabb; Chanel Thervil; Wen-Hao Tien; and Dana Woulfe. Their bios, statements and preliminary sketches of their work is available at https://jartsboston.org/bethechange/. These 7 prominent artists focus on voter rights, the housing crises, reproductive rights, academic censorship, refugees and asylum seekers, mental health stigma in communities of color and more. Six of the installations are being located on spaces near the intersection of Kilmarnock and Van Ness Streets in the Fenway neighborhood and one in front of the offices of Samuel & Associates, our collaborating partner. Last year, the Be The Change art movement was also featured in Cincinatti and is currently on display in LA, with local artists in each community producing the art.
