Description:  A class that builds a good foundation of skill sets for clay.

This class will provide you with the foundation of good clayworking skills.  It will start with the basics, wedging and preparing clay.  Forming a pinch pot will be the simplest work. Wheeling throwing technique such as centering and making a bowl, drying, trimming, bisque firing, glazing and glaze firing to finish the pot.  While the first piece is going through the process, you will also learn how to pull handle for a mug, method of attaching different pieces of clay.  It will follow by slab and coil work. Making lid that fits the pot,  Larger wheel piece such as bowl or plate.  Tall cylinder, narrow

neck/collaring and terminate the class with a simple tea pot.

The idea is to cover the basic clay working skills, including hand-building, wheel work, decoration, firing, and glazing.  The class aims to build a good foundation for students to continue developing his/her/their own skills with clay.  For students with more experience, the class can accommodate by going deeper with each topic while covering the same basics as beginner students.

Materials:

The studio has the basic tools needed.  A student may choose to purchase his/her/their own tools from local art supply store.

Please note that there is an $80 clay and firing fee, directly payable to the instructor.

About the instructor: 

Chin started pottery in the early 1980s.  In addition to teaching at LexArt, he has taught pottery classes at MIT Student Arts Association, Ceramics Studio at UC Berkeley as well as Sorenson Center for the Arts at Babson College over the last thirty years.  Chin is a registered architect by training but his artwork has been accepted in the American Craft Council’s flagship show at Baltimore for both wholesale and retail shows. In the Ceramics Guild, he is known for making large forms.
