Join ArtsArlington as we celebrate two milestones: the culmination of Remembrance of Climate Futures/Arlington in the installation of 23 markers imagining the future impact of climate change on our landscape and community, and the achievements of Kari Percival‘s No Place Like Home, an activist poster project amplifying the messages of local groups working to steward nature while building community.
Meet Tom Starr, who conceived of Climate Futures as a regional project unfolding in a variety of towns and land sanctuaries, and some of the Arlington High School students who developed the local version with him, in collaboration with APS Sustainability Coordinator Rachel Oliveri and ArtsArlington Public Art Curator Cecily Miller. This youth-led public art and environmental education project calls attention to the impacts of climate change on human neighborhoods and natural areas in New England. Arlington students helped Starr conduct environmental research, build a project website, maintain a blog, plan and create a public art project featuring speculative “historical markers” installed townwide, create a temporary wheatpaste mural and work with muralist Sophy Tuttle to produce a permanent mural highlighting local pollinators.
Enjoy refreshments and musical performances by AHS Honors Orchestra & Jazz Band, view a display of artwork created by current Artist-in-Residence Percival, and participate in a planning activity for a future mural arts project in town.
The celebration will be hosted by Arlington High School in its newly renovated, energy-efficient building! Stay tuned to ArtsArlington for more information about this event!
