We’ll look at and talk about all kinds of art in public spaces: environmental or “land” art, social, political, commemorative, art for art’s sake, and more. Whether it’s Maya Lin’s celebrated Vietnam War memorial in D.C., the giant, playful sculptures at the Storm King sculpture garden in the Hudson Valley, installations along the Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston, or Andy Galsworthy’s “Watershed,” the new permanent installation at the DeCordova Museum & Sculpture Park in Lincoln, outdoor art is all around, if one looks. Public art can delight, move, inspire, and calm–or be controversial or even inflammatory. What makes a piece “work”—or not? What has public art tried to express in the past, what is it about nowadays, and where might it be going? We’ll also meet and talk with one of the founders of Arlington Commission for Arts and Culture, Adria Arch, about public art right here in Arlington. Paul Angiolillo
Paul Angiolillo has several interests including art and tea. He been sculpting in wood, stone, and other materials since around the 1990s. He studied with master sculptor Joseph Wheelwright in Boston for many years. Paul has exhibited his works in galleries, juried craft shows, libraries, outdoor exhibits, gift shops (the DeCordova Sculpture Park & Museum in Lincoln and Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton), and other venues. As a a long-time tea connoisseur, he has worked at Upton Tea Imports, a major purveyor of fine loose-leaf teas. He has lectured on the history of tea and held tea-tastings at the Peabody-Essex Museum and other venues.
Adria Arch
Adria Archis an artist who has been instrumental in bringing public art initiatives to Arlington. Adria exhibits her work at galleries and museums internationally. She was chair of Arlington Public Art from 2011 to 2018, and co-chair of the Arlington Commission for Arts and Culture from 2017 to 2019.
