andPlay’s program, “Glass Screams,” showcases four female composers whose works explore the intimacies of the human experience. Villareal’s work is a quiet introspection of the limits of silence and stillness, while Younge turns the performers, instruments, and electronics into chaotic vocalizations. Through her graphic score, Asher engages with the performer’s relationship to themselves and each other, taking inspiration from letters of advice that friends and family wrote to their future selves. Finally, Chen’s work was inspired by her experience listening to Irish fiddling music, and the ways that repetition and variation begin to blur and overpower the original thought. All of the works were commissioned by andPlay and developed in close collaboration with the performers.
