Organized in 1955 by artists wanting to share their work and provide art education to others. Initially showing art on the Cohasset Common, in barns, homes, and library basements, the Art Center has expanded to comprise the following programmatic pillars: Artist Association. The Art Center exists for the artists and communities encompassing the entire South Shore. Local artists have access to master art courses, local and nationally-juried exhibitions to display their creative efforts, an avid audience to purchase their artwork, and a community of artists and art appreciators. Community Outreach. We provide educational outreach, placing artists at community locations, predominantly public schools on the South Shore and overseeing three distinct programs that bring more than 2,000 school-aged students to the Art Center each year to view exhibitions, engage in art, and meet professional artists. Education/Classes. The original fifteen students — people who registered for classes in 1955 — have grown a hundred-fold to more than 1,500 students each year, of which children are roughly one-third. Arts Festival. At the annual Art Center event on Father’s Day weekend, hundreds of artists apply to exhibit in the fine arts tent and nearly one hundred exhibitors display metal, wood, ceramics, fiber, glass, jewelry, photography, sculpture, fine arts, and more for sale.
