The Jazz Festival at the Eustis Estate celebrates David Chesnut
David Chesnut was a coachman and chauffeur who worked at the Eustis Estate from the 1890s until 1905. He had a lifelong passion for music as both a performer and connoisseur. A veteran, he played trumpet in several marching bands and musical groups, directed local military exercises, and collected recordings of John Phillip Sousa. He also hosted jam sessions in the kitchen of his home in Dedham, Mass. Music has remained an important part of the Chesnut family heritage. Both David’s sons David III and Robert became successful jazz musicians, and today his great-grandson Matthew Corman is a rising hip-hop artist.
In conjunction with the festival there is an exhibition called Music and Motion: The Chesnut Family Legacy, featuring artifacts from the Chesnut family collection and an in depth look at their story. The exhibition opens in August and will be on view at the Eustis Estate through April 2024.
