Alden Hall

Alden Hall

Constructed in 1940, Alden Memorial was a gift of the George I. Alden Trust. Alden was WPI’s first professor of mechanical engineering and was known as an innovative educator and accomplished researcher in mechanics and hydraulics. He was also one of the founders of Norton Co. in Worcester.

Alden Memorial was WPI’s first auditorium. The main hall, used for lectures, performances and other events, features massive ceiling beams and stained-glass window medallions illustrating American history and cultural pursuits. In 1992, the building was completely renovated to create a modern and attractive center for the performing arts. Here, WPI’s many musical groups rehearse and perform. In the main hall, Masque and other dramatic arts groups hold productions (including the annual New Voices festival of plays written and produced by the WPI community). Through the Theatre and Technology Program, WPI has become a leader in bringing Information Age technology (including virtual reality) into the theater. The lower level of Alden includes a recital hall, a computer music laboratory, private and group rehearsal facilities, and a music classroom.
