Choro Democrático is a favorite Boston group that plays choro music. Approximately 40 years before samba and 80 years before bossa nova, choro became the first authentically Brazilian musical style. Choro is an "urban folk" music that originated in the late 1800s in Rio de Janeiro through the melding of European dance forms like the polka and waltz with African rhythms. Choro has continued to develop over the past 100 years and today this dynamic music is recognized as a national treasure of Brazil and is increasingly popular in the United States and Europe.
