The Waterworks Museum interprets unique stories of the country’s first metropolitan water system through exhibitions and educational programs on engineering, architecture, social history, and public health. Located along the Chestnut Hill Reservoir, the Waterworks Museum showcases three massive Steam engines and their pumps preserved in their original glory – one of the best publicly-accessible collections of this machinery in existence. Housed in a magnificent 1880’s Richardsonian-style building, it reflects the high ideals of Boston’s “Golden Age”, telling the story of its expansion to become the “Athens of America”.
