Established in 2003 by Irada Djelassi and Katherine Hooper, BoSoma Dance Company is a Peabody-based contemporary dance company combining vibrant, energetic movement with athletic performance quality.  The company’s mission is to make dance captivating and accessible through dynamic performance and community education.

BoSoma presented its premiere performance, Velocity, in September 2004.  Since then, BoSoma has presented 2 annual shows each year in Boston. In 2009, BoSoma launched their Opening Acts Series, which supports emerging dance companies by inviting them to open a BoSoma performance. The company also continues to be involved in the community, completing educational outreach residencies in Massachusetts’s public elementary schools such as Dover-Sherborn Middle School, Pingree School, Nashoba Brooks Elementary School, Jackson Mann Elementary School and more.  After producing and performing in the first annual Massachusetts Dance Festival in 2009, BoSoma contributed pieces that were highlighted in the 2010 and 2011 festivals. While continuing to perform extensively in the Boston area, BoSoma has also performed in NYC, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Philadelphia, Maine, Vermont, and Radofzell, Germany. The company also performs at a variety of dance festivals such as Dance for World Community, The Charles River Dance Festival, SomeDance, Southern Vermont Dance Festival, The Elan Summer Dance Festival, Boston Contemporary Dance Festival and the Outside the Box Festival Boston.  In July 2013, Boston was highlighted and interviewed by WCVB Channel 5, CHRONICLE, about their participation in the 1st Annual Outside the Box Festival in Boston.  The Fall of 2013 marked BoSoma’s 10th Anniversary as a strong contemporary modern dance company in Boston.  November 2014, BoSoma held their 11th Annual Fall Season performance at the Boston University Dance Theatre.  In May 2015, BoSoma performed to Stravinsky’s Les Noces alongside Chorus pro Musica in an evening length collaboration at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall.   Under the Artistic Direction of Katherine Hooper, BoSoma is scheduled to perform at Outside the Box this July, at the Peabody Essex Museum’s Rodin Exhibit: Transforming Sculpture daily 11am-4:30pm from May through September 5th and in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA on Sunday, August 7th at 5pm.

Through performance and education, BoSoma challenges audiences to be creative human beings committed to the enrichment of society.  BoSoma often collaborates with local musicians, visual artists, and other dance companies in order to connect with audiences of different artistic mediums. BoSoma believes that art organization working together is a mutually beneficial process that fosters meaningful partnerships for sustainability. Their objective as a company is to create dance that intrigues, excites, and inspires people – to think, listen, react, and move in a new and open way.
