Lean into the complexity of composer Yoni Avi Battat’s fragmented Arab-Jewish identity through his ensemble’s performance of original and traditional pieces inspired by Middle Eastern musical forms, with lyrics in Hebrew, Arabic, English, and Yiddish
How do we connect with ancestors we’ve never met and traditions we’ve never experienced? Lean into the complexity of composer Yoni Avi Battat's fragmented Arab-Jewish identity through his ensemble's performance of original and traditional pieces inspired by Middle Eastern musical forms, with lyrics in Hebrew, Arabic, English, and Yiddish, and accompanied by projections of artwork by Brandeis professor Ariel Basson Freiberg.
Multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and composer Yoni Avi Battat specializes in contemporary and traditional Jewish music inspired by his Iraqi and Polish ancestry. He performs and records around the world alongside artists who are at the forefront of Jewish music and spent ten months touring the US as a cast member and violinist in the Broadway production of "The Band’s Visit.”
