Two favorite upbeat and joyful works from 1779 in Mozart’s Salzburg period–his superb Coronation Mass K. 317 and the powerful Dominican Vespers K. 321–with renowned vocal soloists and full orchestra
The Spectrum Singers present a thrilling and inspiring concert! A wonderful program of two upbeat and joyful choral works from Mozart’s Salzburg period–his superb “Coronation” Mass in C kv 317 and the powerful yet rarely-performed Dominican Vespers kv 321. The chorus is joined by four renowned soloists, Sarah Yanovitch Vitale, Soprano, Katherine Maysek, Mezzo-Soprano, Charles Blandy, Tenor, and Mark Andrew Cleveland, Bass, along with full orchestra.
Soulful. Reverent. Life-affirming. Inspiriting. Exciting. All of these descriptors apply to Mozart’s Dominican Vespers and Coronation Mass. Spectrum Singers will perform these two impassioned works by this genius composer written, amazingly, in his 23rd year, while he was finishing his residence in Salzburg, chafing under the proscriptions of his boss Archbishop Hieronymous von Colleredo. The archbishop had cautioned the young Mozart to not repeat text, keep his church music free from unnecessary effects, and always be subservient to the liturgy. For a composer of Mozart’s gifts of expression, this must have been extremely difficult. There was precious little room for his creative imagination to take flight. Perhaps as a result of these constraints, he focused all of his energies straight forward, and attempted to project all his pent-up energy toward rapid declamation of the text. This is not to say that this music ever veers into coarseness or mere nervous energy. That rarely if ever occurs in this composer’s music. There is palpable pressure, but always concentrated in a firmly muscular and life-affirming direction. This promises to be an exceptional evening of music-making, and we urge you to join us as we wrap up our 43rd season in grand style.
