The White Raven: Inspiring Music for Troubled Times

The White Raven: Inspiring Music for Troubled Times

Presented by Coro Allegro at Sanders Theatre

Coro Allegro, Boston's award-winning LGBTQ+ and allied classical chorus, invites you to join us in celebrating the resilience of the human spirit. The performance is part of Coro Allegro's centennial celebration of legendary Boston gay composer Daniel Pinkham and our own 30 years of singing with pride with Artistic Director David Hodgkins.

The concert opens with Pinkham's cantata The White Raven, a Coro Allegro commission, a soaring tribute to the wondrous diversity of creation, based on Jubilate Agno, by the brilliant 18th century neurodivergent poet Christopher Smart. The program also features Haydn's Missa in Angustiis or "Nelson Mass," a work showcasing the power of the human voice to transcend adversity. Haydn's Mass for troubled times is paired with Dr. Diane White-Clayton's Many Mansions, a moving reimagining of the African-American Spiritual "In Bright Mansions Above," that reflects on the struggles of our troubled times, with Black lives and pandemic losses in mind. Coro Allegro was honored to premiere this work, commissioned by the Boston Landmarks Orchestra, in the summer of 2022. Guest soloists include soprano Dana Varga, mezzo-soprano Clare McNamara, tenor Omar Najmi, and baritone Wayne Arthur.
