Special Exhibit at the Sandwich Glass Museum: A Pinch of Salt

Presented by Sandwich Glass Museum at Sandwich Glass Museum

Through the ages, salt was used for food preservation and as a commodity to trade. It is then not surprising that “salts”, small vessels used to contain the valuable mineral, were creatively fashioned and cherished items of daily use at the dining table well into the 20 th century. Owning “salts” became a status symbol during the Middle Ages. During the Victorian Era salt shakers were invented, but due to salt clumping but did not become popular until later years. The Boston and Sandwich Glass Company and other companies created “salts” to appeal to consumers.

A curator’s talk will be scheduled.
