Join us for a gallery talk by Dr. Amanda Luyster, Assistant Professor of Art History and guest curator for the exhibition “Bringing the Holy Land Home: The Crusades, Chertsey Abbey, and the Reconstruction of a Medieval Masterpiece”.
Centered around the iconic Chertsey Tiles, Bringing the Holy Land Home reveals the impact of art objects manufactured in the Byzantine and Islamic Mediterranean on the visual culture of England and western Europe. The exhibition builds from research of Dr. Amanda Luyster, Assistant Professor of Art History, with support from a team of students, faculty, and staff at the College of the Holy Cross and other institutions. In addition to the tiles, currently in the collection of the British Museum, the exhibition features works from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Dumbarton Oaks Collection, Harvard University Art Museums, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Morgan Library & Museum, and the Worcester Art Museum.
This exhibition has been awarded generous support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, the Mary Jaharis Center for Byzantine Art and Culture, the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, and the International Center of Medieval Art.
