Students will use ink, watercolor, and gouache on rice paper to create wonderful visual effects.

Note: There will no class on January 16th and February 20th.

Materials:

Students need to bring their own art supplies:  rice-paper, brushes, ink, colors, color mixing plates, felt (put it under paper) and water container. A detailed materials list is available here.

About the instructor:

Qingxiong Ma considers the brush-stroke the essence and the language of Chinese Painting. And though ever mindful of the tradition of my training, Ma has found their own expression with my brush. In their landscapes, Ma uses ink and gouache in many layers to give the painting texture and depth, and sometimes paint on both sides of the absorbent rice paper. They call this technique “Heavily-Colored Free-Hand Chinese Painting”. Inspiration for their landscapes started in China with Huang Shan (the Yellow Mountains), the Great Wall and the Yangtze River and continue in America with the Grand Canyon, the Pacific Coast and New England.
