The 41st annual performance of Douglas Koch’s Epiphany Jazz Mass with jazz quartet (Ensemble Epiphanie), featuring contemporary jazz/Third Stream psalms, hymns and scriptural improvisations.
Old Cambridge Baptist Church (OCBC) in Harvard Sq. kicks off 2023 and the liturgical season of Epiphany with some joyful and hope-filled sonic celebrating! For the 41st year now, pianist and liturgical composer Douglas Koch will present the annual celebration of The Epiphany Jazz Mass with his quartet Ensemble Epiphanie featuring Rich Ploss on sax/flute, Chris Rathbun on bass, and Ed Sorrentino on percussion. This contemporary setting of the mass celebrates the Divine “shining forth” in the life of Christ, and lifts up the yearnings of all humanity for compassion, new life and peace rooted in justice. The psalms, hymns, and setting of this mass are all in jazz and Third Stream idioms, and include the band’s improvisations to Epiphany scripture readings and to Koch’s homiletic ruminations. The service will be both in-person in the Sanctuary of the church (enter from Harvard Street) as well as live streamed on Facebook and Zoom at 10:20am, Sunday, January 8, 2023. For physical participants, masks are recommended.
