"Highbrow, Lowbrow, 'Raw' and 'Weirdo'": Virtual Lecture by Co-Curator Andrei Molotiu

The McMullen Museum welcomes co-curator of American Alternative Comics 1980–2000: Raw, Weirdo, and Beyond Andrei Molotiu for a virtual lecture on the historic foundations of Raw and Weirdo magazines and how each negotiates the tension between highbrow and lowbrow.

Andrei Molotiu is a senior lecturer in the Art History Department, Indiana University Bloomington, where he teaches courses on the history of comics as well as on eighteenth- through twentieth-century European and American art and art theory. He is the author of Fragonard’s Allegories of Love (2007) and co-curator of its accompanying exhibition, and the editor of the Eisner Award-nominated Abstract Comics: The Anthology (2009). He has written numerous essays in comics studies, most recently on Harvey Kurtzman and pop art for a forthcoming volume, Comics and Modernism, on “Artists’ Editions” and the appreciation of original comic art for Comic Art in Museums (2020), and on “cartooning” for Comics Studies: A Guidebook (2020). His next project is curating an exhibition of Saul Steinberg drawings for the Eskenazi Museum of Art. He is also an artist whose abstract comics have been published and exhibited internationally.
