Remedios Varo, a female Spanish painter from the first half of the 20th century, made significant contributions to the Surrealism art movement.

About Querida Remedios:

Remedios Varo was a surrealistic Spanish painter who lived in Mexico. She used to write letters to strangers and she never received an answer back. During this event, María Aliaga will introduce the audience to Remedios Varo’s magical world and show the video dance “Querida Remedios” which is a letter written with dance language.

The audience will write a letter to a stranger and receive one as well!

About María Aliaga:

María is a flamenco dancer, director and choreographer of the “Flamenco a la Mexicana” show that has been presented since 2014 in some of the most important theaters in Mexico City, in New York City and in Boston. Flamenco a la Mexicana opened Farruquito´s and Alfonso Losa´s show in Mexico City.

She studied with Mercedes Amaya, Antonio Canales, Alfonso Losa, among others, in Mexico and in Spain in the Fundación de Cristina Heeren (2001, Seville) and in Amor de Dios (2007, Madrid).

She was dancer at the Adonays Flamenco Company (2005) and with Isaac and Nino de los Reyes (2007) She has worked in tablaos in Mexico, in USA and in Germany.

She produced several video dances such as “Querida Remedios” (Dir. Nur Rubio 2018), a tribute to the Spanish painter Remedios Varo, and “La Catrina y La Llorona” (Dir. Nur Rubio 2016) with which has participated in film festivals around the world and won awards in NYC Indie Film Awards. She has a degree in Art History.

She presented her fashion flamenco collection “Flamenco a la Mexicana 2020” in SIMOF (Salon Internacional de la Moda Flamenca) in Seville, Spain in 2020.

María has been a flamenco teacher in different schools for the last 16 years in dancing academies in Mexico City. She has also taught at Harvard University in HGSE and in Mather House, in women ́s prisons in Mexico City and in the John Langdon Down Foundation for kids with down ́s syndrome.
