Mindfulness & Movement: An Exploration

Mindfulness & Movement: An Exploration

Presented by The Dance Complex at The Dance Complex

About this workshop:

We all use and move our bodies, whether we're dancers, athletes, or not. Our body and its movements hold so much wisdom that many of us have yet to explore. Mindfulness trains the mind, which is intimately connected to and affected by the body: How does the way we feel about ourselves show up in our bodies? How do our bodies affect our thoughts and moods? What kinds of movement are unpleasant, and what kinds bring pleasure? How can we release or express emotions in movement?

This workshop is an experiential exploration of the mind-body relationship in stillness and movement. The invitation is to explore the self and be intentional and mindful in using our bodies. This workshop will draw on practices including guided meditations, movement exploration, and character embodiment.

Open to all levels (no prior dance or mindfulness experience required).

About Selena Lee:

Selena Lee is a dancer and choreographer who has been practicing mindfulness and meditation. Her dance career started in 2017 and has trained in a variety of styles, most notably in contemporary, commercial, and street styles, such as hip-hop. She has experience in many competitive dance teams, teaching, and was part of a dance company (IDCO) in New Zealand in 2021. Selena has been practicing meditation for 5 years and has been on many short-term and long-term retreats and completed the MBSR course. After discovering the powerful connection between her two passions, she started exploring the therapeutic effects of dance and movement and went on to learn about somatics, dance movement therapy, and mindfulness-based movement techniques. She has facilitated several workshops since this seed of curiosity was first planted and has received positive feedback from all levels of movers. This workshop will be part of her continued experimentation with the healing power and the self-knowledge mindful movement offers.
