SOUTH – Ernest Shackleton and the Endurance Expedition

SOUTH – Ernest Shackleton and the Endurance Expedition

Presented by The Cabot at The Cabot

Earlier this year, the wreck of the Endurance, Ernest Shackleton’s ill-fated Antarctic expedition ship, was rediscovered 10,000 feet below the Weddell Sea in Antarctica; at the bottom of the ocean for over a century but still in remarkably good condition. With that in mind, The Cabot presents the Psychedelic Cinema Orchestra performing a live, improvisational score for the 1919 silent film South – Ernest Shackleton and the Endurance Expedition.

South was shot and edited by Frank Hurley, official photographer for Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton’s Antarctic expedition. Shackleton was already a world famous explorer when he hired Hurley to accompany his crew on a brave journey across the South Pole, but within 80 miles of Antarctica, they found themselves and their ship trapped amongst the heavily packed ice. What followed this moment of disaster is one of the greatest adventure stories ever told and an unbelievable tale of survival, and Hurley managed to save many of the stills and motion picture film he shot of the harrowing experience. It is these movies and images make up South.

Run time approx. 80 minutes.
