In the Making: Cannupa Hanska Luger

In the Making: Cannupa Hanska Luger

Presented by North Bennet Street School at North Bennet Street School

Cannupa Hanska Luger is a New Mexico-based multidisciplinary artist who uses social collaboration in response to timely and site-specific issues. Raised on the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota, Luger connects performance and political action to communicate stories about 21st century Indigeneity—through monumental installations that incorporate ceramics, video, sound, fiber, steel, new media, technology, and repurposed materials. This work provokes diverse audiences to engage with Indigenous peoples and values, and often presents a call to protect endangered lands.

Recently on view at Peabody Essex Museum alongside Marie Watt, the exhibition Each/Other celebrated two leading Indigenous artists focused on collaborative artmaking, community engagement, materials, and the land.

Join us in speaking with Cannupa about his use of traditional, craft-based skills and techniques in building monumental instruments of education and community.
