Chameleon Arts Ensemble opens its winter chamber music season with five fantastical tales of whimsy and enchantment by Schumann, Szymanowski, Miriam Gideon, Lou Harrison, and Brahms.
Chameleon Arts Ensemble opens its winter chamber music season with “a thousand tales sung” featuring five fantastical works of whimsy and enchantment. Robert Schumann’s Märchenerzählungen for clarinet, viola, and piano transports us to a magical world of innocence and fairy tales while Miriam Gideon offers a parody of children’s verse with her Rhymes from the Hill for soprano, clarinet, cello, and marimba. Karol Szymanowski’s 1915 Mythes for violin and piano conjures shimmering reflections of Narcissus and Pan, and Lou Harrison portrays the goddess of the labyrinth in Ariadne for flute and percussion. Finally, Brahms gives us an exquisite illustration of Goethe’s Werther with his c minor Piano Quartet.
