History of Documentary Photography with Professor Karl Baden

To provide a wider context for the photographs on display in the McMullen Museum’s exhibition, Martin Parr: Time and Place, Boston College Professor of Photography and Exhibition Curator Karl Baden will present an hour-long crash course in the history of documentary photography for Museum Members. Karl Baden is an Associate Professor of the Practice of Photography in the Art, Art History, and Film Department at Boston College. Baden’s photographs have been widely exhibited, including at the Museum of Modern Art, NYC; Institute of Contemporary Art; deCordova Museum; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Musée Batut, France; Photokina, Cologne; and the Photographers Gallery, London. Among other photographic projects, Baden has made a photograph of his face every day since February 23, 1987. He has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, and Light Work Visual Studies, among other foundations. His photographs and visual books are included in the permanent collections of many museums and galleries. He has taught at Harvard University, Rhode Island School of Design, Clark University, and Phillips Academy at Andover; and has been on the faculty at Boston College since 1989.
