The McMullen Museum welcomes Boston College Irish Studies Professors Marjorie Howes, Vera Kreilkamp, and Joseph Nugent to introduce Martin Parr’s Irish photographs that form the core of its current exhibition, Martin Parr: Time and Place. These images are at once documentary, carefully composed, and frequently enigmatic. They will trace how Parr’s early black and white photos of the first papal visit to a deeply reverent and seemingly timeless traditional Ireland evolve into often ironic depictions of one of Europe’s most innovative, consumer-oriented, and socially liberal countries. Their presentation will illustrate how a talented artist, moving from black and white to color photography, registers rapid social change with humor and, on occasion, with more biting critique.
