This class is designed for those who are interested in learning about makam and music from Turkey, the Balkans, Greece, the Arab world and modern-day Iran. Students will be taught the mechanics of makam (how it works and how it is different from Western music) development of taksim (improvisation), analysis of repertoire, makam aesthetics (how to listen to makam music) and performance practice.

All instrumentalists, vocalists and avid music listeners 15 years and older are welcome.
