Cambridge, MA – On November 19, 20, and 21, 2021, Cambridge Chamber Ensemble (CCE) will present Savitri, Gustav Holst’s poignant and ravishing chamber opera.

Gustav Holst composed vocal and orchestral music inspired by his long fascination with Hindu religion and culture. Savitri combines rapturous music and imagery with the search for the path to spiritual enlightenment. Savitri hears Death calling to claim her husband Satyavan. Satyavan assures her that her fears are but Maya (illusion) but his strength fails and he falls, dying, to the ground. Savitri, now alone and desolate, welcomes Death. But Death, moved by her virtue and kindness, restores Satyavan to life.

Indian classical dancer Kavya Prasad introduces the opera to the audience with an intimate telling of Savitri and Satyavan’s "back story". An after-party welcomes the audience to meet and greet the cast with food and drink.

Cambridge Chamber Ensemble presents operatic gems that are not often seen but deserve to be for their excellent vocal and orchestral music. CCE engages both emerging artists and established performers, and strives for diversity in casting and roles.
