PARTICIPANTS will include scholars, performers, instrument makers, curators of instrument collections, and historical instrument experts. We shall have a menagerie of instruments to demonstrate and discuss! The afternoon session will encompass the instruments themselves, their mechanisms, construction, tuning, and what they teach us about performing Beethoven on the modern piano. The evening session will be devoted to lecture-demonstrations and performances of Beethoven works for keyboard.

Featured Original Instruments: Broadwood 1796 (“Manuel de Godoy”); Peter Fritz, 1815. Copies of Original Instruments: Johann Koennicke, Vienna, 1790; Anton Walter, 1795; Christoph Gottlob Hofmann, 1794 (clavichord); Johann Heinrich Silbermann, ca. 1775 (clavichord).

This international symposium is presented with generous support from the Boston University Center for the Humanities, the Office of the Dean of the College of Fine Arts, and the BU School of Music.
