Principal Bassoon Hazel Malcolmson takes center stage in Zwilich’s tour de force concerto, along with Coleridge-Taylor’s witty Rhapsodic Dance and the ever-popular Scheherazade of Rimsky-Korsakov.
COLERIDGE-TAYLOR:Rhapsodic Dance No. 1 (The Bamboula)
ZWILICH:Concerto for Bassoon & Orchestra,Hazel Malcolmson, bassoon
RIMSKY-KORSAKOV:Scheherazade, Op. 35
Known as the “African-Mahler, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Bamboula is a witty, bouncy and tuneful curtain-raiser, most fitting for an evening rhapsody. Our Principal Bassoonist, Hazel Malcolmson, treats us to a bassoon concerto by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich that is dynamic, tender, and a tour de force for the soloist. The program concludes with the ever-popular symphonic suite “Scheherazade.” Such great stories to tell, and you can make up your own as you listen!
