About this Session

In this three-hour seminar, we will discuss and practice a range of strategies, both micro- and macro-level, to help you revise a story and submit it for publication. You should bring with you a printed draft of a piece you’re working on, preferably a short story, and we will do a variety of in-class exercises that will inspire you to look at your writing in new ways and find the best revision strategies that will help you bring your work to a new level of sophistication. Exercises will include restructuring the piece as a whole, tightening the prose, achieving graceful transitions, and discussing revision methods practiced by renowned writers such as Zadie Smith, George Saunders, and Tina Chang. In the latter part of the seminar, we will discuss how to go about submitting to literary magazines and even draft a cover letter you can use when you’re ready to find a home for your work. You will come away newly inspired to revise and complete your current piece, knowing how to take the next step of submitting to magazines, and an arsenal of revision strategies to use with all your writing going forward.
