This course will introduce the technique of Chinese brush painting. Students will explore the landscape with a combination of Chinese brush painting and Western techniques. Using freehand brushwork, the emphasis will be on expressiveness, individual interpretation, and abstraction through exaggeration. Students will use ink, watercolor, and gouache on rice paper to create wonderful visual effects. This class will learn about trees, rocks, mountains, rivers, and waterfalls.

Students need to bring their own art supplies: rice paper, brushes, ink, colors, color mixing plates, felt (put it under paper) and a water container. A detailed materials list is available here.

About the instructor:

I consider the brush-stroke the essence and the language of Chinese Painting. And though ever mindful of the tradition of my training, I have found my own expression with my brush. In my landscapes, I use ink and gouache in many layers to give the painting texture and depth and sometimes paint on both sides of the absorbent rice paper. I call this technique “ Heavily-Colored Free-Hand Chinese Painting”. Inspiration for my landscapes started in China with Huang Shan (the Yellow Mountains), the Great Wall, and the Yangtze River and continues in America with the Grand Canyon, the Pacific Coast, and New England.
