About the Class or Event

6 Saturdays, 9:00 am-12:00 pm

Begins October 16, In Studio

Skill Level: Beginner

Tuition: $200

Materials fee: $75 directly payable to the instructor

Description:  You will weave at the first session!

This 6 sessions course is designed to give you a working knowledge of multi-harness looms from designing a simple project through “finishing” the cloth when it comes off the loom.  We will introduce and tackle design and yarn measurement, “dressing” the loom, weaving the project, and finishing techniques.  We will demonstrate the operation of floor looms that reside in our studio.  We will also expose you to specialty structures with guest instruction by our accomplished Guild weavers. Our unique approach allows you to weave immediately on yarn that is already on the loom.  Your second project will have you measure and place the yarn onto the loom before weaving it and the final project will be your design and completion of a simple scarf or table runner.

Note: The $75 kit includes loom rental, yarn, handouts etc.

Instructor Bio:

I began weaving because a friend wanted to take a weaving course but she wanted to learn with a friend. I said I would join her and my husband's comment was..."Sure....but we're not buying a loom!" Result: I fell in love with weaving—the tactile nature of it, the creativity of design, the mystery of the interaction between color and weave structure, and the fun of meeting new friends who share in the excitement. My husband bought me a 36" Harrisville floor loom kit; I was on my way!

Over the last 30 years, most of my family and friends have received a variety of handwoven pieces.

Currently, I work mostly with Tencel and Bamboo yarn – Bamboo being a relatively new source of fiber. In addition, Bamboo is extremely soft and drapes well--perfect for scarves and shawls!

Sometimes, I use white yarn and dye it by mixing colors and then hand-painting them on the warp. My textiles are designed on a computer after looking at the warp colors and trying many weave structures. When I'm convinced that I've found the weave structure that shows off the colors best I'm ready to set up the loom. Then I use the first few inches to see if the "marriage" between the yarn and the weave structure works.

I have been a member of the Weaver's Guild of America, Weaver's Guild of Boston, and LexArt’s Weaving and Fiber Arts Guild and have taught Weaving courses and given private instruction.
