Death By Life, A Digital Opera

Death By Life, A Digital Opera

Presented by White Snake Projects at Online/Virtual Space

"There are over 200,000 of us

And we are brilliant"
Galvanized by the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, the virtual opera Death by Life was conceived as a monument of support for the Black Lives Matter movement. The opera explores the intersection of systemic racism and mass incarceration using texts written by incarcerated writers and their families, with a score by five Black composers—Jacinth Greywoode, Leila Adu-Gilmore, Jonathan Bailey Holland, David Sanford and Mary D. Watkins—representing a broad range of ages and styles. The sets are immersive 3D environments created in Unreal Engine by Curvin Huber, White Snake’s Director of Innovation.  Kimille Howard directs and Tianhui Ng music directs. Caution: Some scenes contain strong language.

Admission Info

TAP
Anyone who wants to go to the opera should be able to; the ability to pay should never be a barrier.  TAP, White Snake Projects’ Ticket Access Program, is central to our vision of social activism and inclusion. Through TAP, the doors to White Snake’s productions are open to all.  For Death By Life, we’re extending TAP to anyone who has experienced incarceration (or their loved ones), and to anyone financially impacted by the pandemic.

Ticket Prices
Tickets for Death By Life are on a sliding scale, meaning you should Pay What You Can! Our suggested ticket prices reflect the work to deliver a fully produced, live opera experience online. If you've normally purchased your ticket for a White Snake Projects’ opera and can afford to again, we hope you’ll do so at the same price level in recognition of the hard work and financial investment it’s taken to create this remarkable production. The suggested ticket prices are: $150, $90, $55, and $25.  These are prices that we normally charge for in-theater performances, except that one ticket services an entire family.  If you’re moved to contribute more than the suggested price, please do so and thank you!
