An Evening with Mapuche Artist Sebastián Calfuqueo

An Evening with Mapuche Artist Sebastián Calfuqueo

Presented by Tertulia at Online/Virtual Space

You are invited to join us for an evening with Sebastián Calfuqueo, an Indigenous Mapuche non-binary artist living in Santiago, Chile, whose work grapples with race, class, and gender intersectionality of the Mapuche subject in contemporary society, and is often combined with reflection on the Mapuches’ relationship to land, water and nature. Calfuqueo approaches their work with a decolonial lens to look critically at Western and Spanish colonial binary thinking. Their work makes visible trans-feminisms, sexual dissidence, and territorialized and embodied social movements. The event will be conducted in Spanish and English, and will include Calfuqueo’s presentation of their work, a discussion with scholar José Falconi, and time for Q & A with the audience.

Sebastián Calfuqueo is an artist, performer, and video maker with an MFA in Fine Arts from the University of Chile. They are part of the Mapuche collective Rangiñtulewfü and Yene Revista. Calfuqueo’s work includes installation, ceramics, performance and video art. Their work has been exhibited in Chile, Perú, Brasil, México, United States, Germany, Spain, United Kingdom, Sweden, Switzerland, Australia. Recent exhibitions in Santiago, Chile include solo presentations at Galería 80m2 Livia Benavides, Galería D21, Galería Metropolitana, Parque Cultural de Valparaíso and MAC (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo).

They were awarded the Municipalidad de Santiago Award in 2017 and the Fundación FAVA Award in 2018.
